Ukraine: The future of EU-Ukraine relations is at stake. Jacek Saryusz-Wolski MEP
During yesterday's plenary debate on Ukraine, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski MEP, on behalf of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, said:"The future of EU-Ukraine relations is at stake. The sentence of the former PM Yulia Tymoshenko must be condemned. This trial is politically motivated and did not meet even minimal European standards.
"Ukraine's European aspirations require practicing European values of democracy and rule of law. This is not the case in Ukraine.
"If the Ukrainian Government continues its path of sabotaging the political opposition and abusing power, it will put the economic and European perspective of Ukraine at risk.
"Yulia Tymoshenko should be acquitted, released and enjoy full political and civic rights now.
"The verdict, if not annulled, will have consequences for the implementation of the Association Agreement.
"Nevertheless, negotiations of the AA should be completed and the document initialled, as planned, under the Polish Presidency in December. Afterwards, its signature and ratification could be declined, if no changes in Ukraine occur.
"Thus, Ukraine shall be made aware of what it might lose, but, what is even more important, at the same time, the EU will be sending a positive signal to the Ukrainian nation and people who have legitimate European aspirations."
